Pastor Carter addresses Questions on
DISCERNMENT
Through the years I have heard much said about discernment. Mainly what I have been taught is that discernment is some spiritual power given to some by the Lord and they can automatically, every time see into someone's soul. How do you define discernment? What do you have to say about it?
First you have to understand there is a difference between common discernment (that we are all supposed to possess to a certain degree), and the Gift of Discernment (or rather, the Gift of Discerning of Spirits... which not all have).
I used to get frustrated over this - why it was that people couldn't see the obvious. The answer was simple, yet I didn't understand it until a few years ago. The reason people couldn't see the obvious is because to them it wasn't obvious. Sometimes it is the Lord that allows you to see something that you think others surely see as well. But not necessarily so. Perhaps it is the Gift of Discernment operating through you that has allowed you to see these things. But God only allows you to see things like that on occasion for one reason: so you can do something about it. Sometimes doing something about it means you confront the spirit of the enemy head on and publicly, but usually it means you take on the enemy in private and cast him down from his place of possession so that that lives affected may be delivered and set free.
__________
We hear a lot about some televangelists being false teachers and false prophets. Don't you think if we had the spirit of discernment the Holy Ghost would let us know?
Sadly, it doesn't take much discernment these days to locate those in deception and error. ...Just look at the fruit demonstrated in their lives.
One so-called "bishop" divorced his wife and married another 7 days later, and the Christian community around him smiled, patted him on the back, and went on supporting him. Another changed his doctrine to say that there is no hell, and that all men are saved and going to heaven and they just don't know it yet. Yet some of the same folks in the Christian community scratch their chins and squint their eyes like this is some deep new revelation, and blindly accept it as truth. A large portion of the so-called Charismatic leadership stand in front of us, talk in tongues, and then go to their closed conference rooms backstage and suck down the wine like it's water.
I wish folks needed to use discernment more than they do. There are just some things that are so obvious that all you can do is shake your head in disbelief and walk the other way.
