Title:  Salem Church Changes Its Focus and Mission

SALEM, Ind. -- Chad Carter said that shortly after he came to lead [his congregation], he could tell it was in need of a spiritual makeover.

So he, his wife Sarah and the congregation began praying for God to breathe new life into it.  They...began a new ministry called Family Harvest Church, which opened July 30.

Since then, some large ministries have been born at the small church at 300 W. Mulberry St.

"We wanted to turn it into something the Lord can be proud of and something the members can be proud of," Carter said.

In the 15 months since he became pastor, Carter has started a radio and television ministry, a food [bank] and community clothes [center] for needy families, and has lined up guest speakers and entertainers this summer for programs to encourage the community.

A complete list of the schedule can be found online at FHCglobal.org.

The church has grown from about 15 to 50 for Sunday morning worship.

Although the growth is encouraging, the pastor said it hasn't been easy.

[A member of the congregation] said Carter's enthusiasm has brought a new excitement that carries the church through the hard times.

To help advertise sermons and invite the community to Family Harvest, Carter has sent notices through local media and the mail.

One message in particular, "God Loves Everybody," drew a crowd of protesters outside during the Sunday service.

Carter responded by gathering the congregation, stepping outside and praying for the protesters as they shouted that God hates sinners, The Salem Democrat reported.

Through that trying time, Carter has focused on positive ministry to the community.  A food bank is open by appointment, and a [community] clothing [center] lined with shelves and racks of men's, women's and children's shoes and clothes is open one Saturday a month.

He is working to build Family Harvest Christian Academy, a school led by Sarah Carter that teaches students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Family Harvest is equipping the parking lot for...recreational vehicle[s] so that guest speakers who travel that way will have a place to park.

A renovation project in the church building has created classroom space, a green room for visiting pastors, [and is in the process of creating] a sanctuary overflow area and a better connection between the kitchen and fellowship hall.

Carter said he is seeing God bless humble beginnings at Family Harvest.

He said the worship style is Pentecostal with people expressing their worship to God in different ways.

"We embrace all of that," he said.

"It's not important how you worship, but that you worship."

Come for a visit to Family Harvest Church!
We would love to welcome you to the Family!
