Title: "Clothing center a dream come true"
STEPHANIE TAYLOR-FERRIELL
Dolores Bush has finally seen a dream come true.
For decades, the Family Harvest Church member
imagined a clothing center at her church, providing
clean, quality clothes free of charge to anyone in need.
After months of planning and preparation, the clothing center is operating one Saturday a month. The next date is this Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Bush and Ailene Nunley head up the effort.
“They’ve spent hours upon hours – probably hundreds of hours by now – washing and folding clothes,” said Pastor Chad Carter.
Bush said only quality clothes are selected. “We don’t want to give anything away that we wouldn’t wear ourselves,” she said. “That’s our motto. Just because you’re in need doesn’t mean you have to wear bad clothes.”
The large room housing the clothing center is filled with racks and shelves donated by businesses and individuals. They’re filled with more than 3,000 items of apparel, all neatly displayed and arranged by gender and size.
“There’s something for everybody from babies to adults,” said Nunley.
Some of the clothes are brand new and there are many name-brand items such as Gap, Tommy Hilfiger, Aeropostale and Old Navy.
Nunley and Bush began stockpiling clothes after their congregation responded when asked to clean out their closets and bring in any unused items. They also receive items from a consignment shop in Brownstown. Donations are welcome and may be made by calling the church office. Carter noted donations of new undergarments are needed and always appreciated.
The clothing center has been open three times. …
[Bush] and Nunley said with rising gas prices and the sluggish economy, people are feeling it in their pocketbooks.
“People come back and thank us, a lady came back from the first time and said, ‘You just don’t know what this means,’” said Bush. “They were just so grateful.”
Carter noted the clothing center will be open by appointment for special circumstances, such as a family who has been victim of a fire.
The church also plans to extend its ministry to include a food bank beginning in January. “We’re stockpiling it now,” said Carter.
The pastor said people’s basic needs must be met first. “You have to meet people’s needs on that practical level first,” Carter said. “We want to be a blessing to people. We believe this will be a blessing to this community for years to come.”
