Newspaper: The Salem Democrat, Salem IN
Reporter: Stephanie Taylor-Ferriell, Editor
Title: 'Lewis protests Carter's service'
continuing to speak out publicly
against the teachings of John
Lewis, pastor of Old Paths
Family Harvest Church sent a
letter to Lewis inviting him and
Everybody Sunday" held this
church during the event with
about 30 of his congregation members. Lewis and his members are outspoken opponents of homosexuality, abortion and what they call the false teachings of many local preachers.
Carter, who moved to the community less than a year ago, first encountered the group in November. They were protesting on the square and holding a variety of signs bearing messages of hate and photos of aborted fetuses.
In his sermon the next Sunday and in an article in The Salem Democrat the following week, Carter rebuked Lewis' message.
When he planned the "God Loves Everybody Sunday" he said he felt he should inform Lewis of it, since he was the reason behind it.
"I simply thought it an appropriate courtesy to know that I would be challenging a false doctrine that you are responsible for bringing to the forefront," Carter wrote in his letter to Lewis. "...The true, biblical perspective of the love of God varies greatly from the way you and your group have portrayed it to this community."
Carter noted [that] the Church Alive of Atlanta, Ga., held a congruent "God Loves Everybody Sunday" on Feb. 18.
Carter said his sermon this past Sunday focused on the Christian belief that God loves everybody -- including sinners.
He said the protester's message is nothing more than a "gospel of condemnation, void of the important element of redemption."
"Condemnation alone," Carter said,"prevents the Holy Spirit from adding the important equation of conviction, without which conversion would be impossible."
"If the conversion of the lost is not achieved, for what purpose does our preaching serve?" asked Carter. "If all we do is alienate the lost from our message of salvation in Christ by telling them they are hated by God, we have willfully rebelled against the great commission of our Lord and will be found guilty on the day of judgement of driving people away from the Savior we were commanded to bring people to."
"...God hates no one," said Carter. "That's my beef with their message. They don't seem to get it."
According to the signs held by the protesters Sunday, Old Paths members do not agree with that theology.
"God doesn't love everybody," one sign read. Another said, "Love of God Conditional." Other signs promoted the group's belief that God hates homosexuals and "lying preachers."
Lewis and his group remained at Family Harvest Church, located at 300 W. Mulberry St., about an hour.
Salem City Police Chief Scott Ratts and officers patrolled the area during the morning service, but said it remained peaceful.
Carter said he has received numerous supportive comments since The Salem Democrat article in November. He said his church is gaining attention beyond the borders of Washington County, as well.
The March issue of "Good News Monthly," a free Christian newspaper, contains a feature on the church. Carter also said church contacts in Virginia Beach, Va. have asked for information on the Carter and Lewis confrontation because they want to submit it to the Christian Broadcasting Network, which produces such shows as "The 700 Club with Pat Robertson." □
